Why do you want what you want?

Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it.
— Maya Angelou

There is a little game you can play with yourself, or with anyone else, to get to the heart of what you really want.

It’s really simple. You just ask ‘Why?’

I want that new job.

I’d love to find a loving partner.

I need that new house.

Because I want to earn more money.

I want to be taken care of.

I need more space for my family.

If you keep drilling down and down beneath the why’s, all the way down, you will most likely eventually come to this answer:

Because I want to be happy.

It’s the basis of all human needs. When we get beyond food, shelter, water, security, it all comes down to happiness.

So perhaps start there, and work your way back up, rather than the other way around. Make happiness your first goal, the primary goal, of all you do. Find ways to be happy that are not connected to external circumstances, as they can be taken away from you at anytime.

Find your intrinsic happiness, in the simplest ways possible, and find your comfort there.

I start with my happiness in mind.
